Is Getting a Tattoo Too Much of a Risk?

Nowadays tattoos are more common than ever. People can see them around on all walks of life, not just convicts and rebels like the old days. Even though tattoos are more accepted in today’s society, the subject has still stirred up a lot of controversy over the years. There are a lot of reasons why people are too nervous to go under the needle like: the pain, job reasons, and some people even think it’s a sin according to their religion. One of the biggest reasons however are all of the health risks involved in getting a tattoo.

In the Article Tattoos: Understand Risks and Precautions written by the Mayo Clinic Staff, it explains in depth all of the risks and precautions to take before going under the needle. Tattoos breach the skin, which means that skin infections and other complications are possible. Some specific things that can happen are: allergic reactions, skin infections, blood borne diseases, and even MRI complications (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012).

However, it’s easy to keep these complications from happening as long as the proper precautions and aftercare instructions are followed. One must make sure they insist on the proper safety precautions and take really good care of the tattoo. One must also ensure that they go to a reputable tattooing studio that employs only properly trained employees. Also, the time where most skin infections occur is after leaving the tattoo shop. It is key for people getting a new tattoo to make sure they keep it clean and follow the aftercare instructions given by the tattoo professional properly.

Overall, tattoos are a great form of personal expression and wearable artwork. Our body’s are a giant blank canvas, so why not use it, right? Tattoos are awesome and they are definitely worth the risk. As long as the proper precautions and aftercare instructions are followed, one will be the proud owner of a gorgeous new piece of body art.

  1. Tattoos are certainly a sensitive subject to many people, and at the very least a topic that most people have an opinion on. Individual concerns, health risks, and public opinion are all factors to consider when considering a new tattoo. The trouble begins when people with these concerns force them on people with, or wanting to get tattoos. Ultimately, this is a personal matter; although with any individual choice, there will be public criticism.
"A tattoo is an affirmation: that this body is yours to have and to enjoy while you're here. Nobody else can control what you do with it."
    -Don Ed Hardy
I love this quotation! This perfectly sums up my attitude towards tattoos: they are an affirmation of self or a belief, a personal expression, and an appreciation of beautiful artwork! I believe these are good and valid reasons if and when someone decides to get a tattoo.

  3. Heidi,
Thank you! I love the quote by Don Ed Hardy as well. It's definitely one of my favorites. I remember when I got my first tattoo, my mom freaked! But just as the quote says, no one else can control what you do with your body. I will always love tattoos no matter what anyone else thinks about them. I look at them as wearable artwork. Some people hang art, but I just wear mine! ;) I do get a lot of stares from time to time (mostly from older people) about my tattoos, but I would never change/remove them. My husbands parents are also not really big fans of tattoos because they are from the Ukraine where tattoos aren't as common as they are here in the U.S. They are old-fashioned and conservative, but they have gotten used to it :) I think they learned that you can't judge someone just because they have tattoos; they know that even if I do have them, it doesn't change what kind of person I really am.

  4. This is a great Blog! Tattoos are a great form of self-expression that allows people to show their identity. However, people do need to be careful when they get a tattoo.
Today the world is full of health risks, and getting a tattoo is just one more of those types of activities where everyone needs to take care. Knowing the risks such as potential infection and contracting a disease is very important. These risks should be evaluated when selecting a place to get a tattoo.
Tattoos are great! Anyone choosing to get a tattoo just needs to find a reputable place to get their tattoo and be sure to take care of the health and body. The tattoo will last forever, and everyone with a tattoo should be able to show it off for all of their life.

  6. Hey Liz I found our time zone is wrong. I was working on my comments before Noon and noticed they were showing an hour later. I found the setting under Settings and Language of all places. I think I fixed mine.

  7. When I opened the blog I thought, "WOW!" Great colors and set up for the topic. Try to get rid of the white space between the commentary and the comments.

The commentary gives some great information. However, you must have an opinion on what the author of the article states. Also, the commentary should be written in 3rd person and there are some punctuation errors. These should all be pretty easy fixes.

    Love your creativity!
